Use the Lab Color space when sharpening your images.

Quick Tip - Photoshop
( Moderate to Advanced )
Use the Lab Color space when sharpening your images. I saw this tip on photoshop tv and it’s one I use almost everyday now. It requires an extra step but you will get cleaner images without worrying about the halo effect you sometimes get when sharpening images.

Step 1: Convert the Image to LAB Color space
Open an image in photoshop and then select: image/mode/lab color from the image menu.

Step 2: Edit LAB Channels
Next go to the channels tab in the layers palette.

Step 3: Apply unsharpened Mask
Next apply an unsharpened mask to the Lightness Channel.

Step 4: Convert Color Space
Finally once the image looks the way you would like convert the image back to the RGB or CMYK color space. That’s it your done.
